Stamsund in Norway
The tourist season in Stamsund, Norway is nearing its peak and the project there drawing to a close. Cleaning of the harbour is nearly complete, but covering up the contaminated material remains to be done. Blasting through a new approach is complete. Material obtained in making the approach is used for a new, adjacent breakwater and approximately a quarter of the total fill is in place. Blasting and dredging inside the harbour is still to be done.
The harbour appearance will change considerably, as an island existed where the new approach is now. Larger ships will be able to use the harbour, creating opportunities in fisheries and other industry. This project has therefore been awaited with much anticipation for years.
Hurtigruten is a ferry that services the coast of Norway and Stamsund is one port of call. The ships are large and even after the upgrade can not enter the harbour, but must moor at a pier outside like before. Stamsund is a small town of only 1.500 inhabitants, so the arrival of large ships greatly affects life in the place. Two ferries stop by every day.
In addition to the traditional industries and tourism, Stamsund attracts artists and the town even boasts two theatres. A few weeks back a week long theatre festival was held here. It just so happened that the electricity went out on the Friday night and the whole Lofoten district was without power for 5 hours. Ístak managed to lend the event organisers two generators, making it possible to perform two plays on schedule.
