ILULISSAT Greenland
Establishment is still in progress at the power station site called Pakitsoq, some 60 km from the town of Ilulissat. The camp will accommodate 110 people and 60 of the 90 people now working on site have already moved in. The canteen is operational and workshop, store and batching plant are being erected. Internet and telephone has been connected.
The contract includes design and engineering firms Verkís and Efla have had some 10 people working on design this spring and summer.
Most of the tools and equipment required has been brought to site. The bulk of this came from Sisimiut, but other from Europe and Iceland, including some equipment from Ístak’s projects in Norway. Considerable new investment was made and it is in fact incredible how much equipment is required for the project.
There is another canteen and accommodation for 22 in Ilulissat where the workers stayed initially, travelling the fjord morning and night. The line crew of 11 has a base and stays there on weekends, but stays in tents along the line during the week.
The transmission line from site to town is about 50 km long. Mast foundations are being built this summer and are going well with 40 of 138 complete.
In Pakitsoq, work has been done on the 2.5 km road from site to the station head race tunnel, a portion of which had to be blasted. Further work will be done this summer on the road to the inlet at lake 187 and then on to lake 233.
Pre-cut is now being done for the station access tunnel and drilling planned to start on 30 August. Access tunnel to the tailrace tunnel will also begin in August. Work should thus have started on two tunnel fronts in September. Tunnelling subcontractor is Tucon of Slovakia.
Contracts are in place for manufacture of turbines, generators and transformers. Invitations for tender are still to be done for manufacture and installation of transmission line masts.
The first of three turbines is to be operational in Nov. 2012 and contract completion is in Dec. 2013.
Ilulissat is located at the picturesque Disco Bay and attracts a large number of tourists. Ilulissat is home to 5.000 people and 4.000 dogs. Ístak’s people have been well received by the locals and all relation with them has been good.
The available ships are; landing craft Viking II, tugboat / freighter Smyrill, speedboat Lómur, an unnamed Flexifloat 30*40 feet barge and some smaller craft.
