ÍSTAK and Per Aarsleff are the prime contractors for the project: Nuuk’s Port Expanded. The harbor construction in Nuuk will double the port area and create a new container terminal that will be ready by the end of the year. The new port will be on two islands, which will be tied together with landfilling.
Elfa Engineers are responsible for the design of buildings, Ramböll for the designs of the port installation and the engineering firm Mannvit rents out workers for work surveillance for the buyer.
It is expected that the port expansions will boost Greenland’s economy. Páll Hermannsson, the port director, claimed among others in an interview that ÍSTAK and the other companies have such great knowledge and experience from other port project such as in Iceland, Greenland, Norway and Faroe Islands and therefore they fitted perfectly for this project.
Páll also said that the Port in Nuuk is Greenland’s central harbor. Contanierships sil to and from Denmark and Iceland to the harbor with its products and from there they go on to other Greenland’s villages. Greenlanders expect that the harbor will create new opportunities, including reception of cruise ships.
